Amplify Schools at Eton College

On Tuesday, Amplify Schools hosted its flagship Finance for Good workshop and simulation at Eton College.

Over 100 Eton College students, alongside students from the Thames Valley Learning Partnership took part in the workshop.

The fast-paced session started out with Stephen Barnett, Head of Amplify Schools, providing a 30,000 foot overview of the investing industry, and why it matters. Students were introduced to the three fundamental principles of investing; risk/reward, the power of compounding, and capped loss/unlimited gain.

Students were then introduced to the concept of ethical investing, where they were challenged to answer the question: ‘to what extent is it the responsibility of the finance and investing industry to benefit society and protect the environment?’. There was a lively discussion of the trade-offs and compromises required to be an ethical investor.

The second half of the workshop saw students access the flagship Amplify Schools simulation. Students were given £20 million to invest across five investments (Tesla, Apple, Bitcoin, Amazon, Meta). The simulation tested students’ abilities to react quickly to complex news, managing their portfolios in order to maximise returns whilst appropriately managing risk.

The simulation provided students with a real-life experience of life on the trading floor. The leaderboard made the event competitive, with some students making over £10 million (virtually, unfortunately!) during the course of the simulation.

Amplify Schools provides workshops to schools from across the country. For students who are interested in gaining practical experience of finance and investing, Amplify Schools has launched its flagship WorkX virtual summer work experience programme, designed for 16-19 year olds.

George Fussey, Director of Career Education, Eton College:

‘It was great to give so many students the opportunity to experience the highs and lows (and longs and shorts) of trading and to provide them with a sound understanding of the world of investing and the ethics that underly it. There was a real buzz in the room by the end and the boys had learned a lot about the need for balance in their portfolios and understand the volatility of the market and the way it responds to current events and central government intervention’
